Meet Your Media Fellow!

Teresa Cummings

I am a Junior Technical Communications major (WRTC) and excited to work with you all this semester.  Having worked on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) team projects in the past, I specialize in data visualization, digital storytelling, and adapting digital tools to new projects.

When I'm not tinkering on a digital tool, you can find me petting dogs or singing off-key to my latest Spotify playlist.

If you have any questions, please schedule a consultation. My hours are:

  • Tuesday 12:30pm-1:30pm, 4pm-5pm

  • Wednesdays 5pm-6pm

  • Thursdays 4:30pm-6:30pm

If I am not available, please book a consultation with another of our amazing DigiComm tutors or contact me to schedule an appointment at: cumminte@dukes.jmu.edu

**I am now available for Online-Video Consultations, see Appointy for more information.**

Using images from Google isn't exactly free and can lead to some trouble. Today we will go over how to find reusable images and how to cite images in different ways. If the image isn't yours, you must cite it.

Questions
  • What fonts are available on Piktochart?
Piktochart offers serif, sans-serif, and decorative fonts. For online infographics we recommend using a sans-serif font. A sans-serif font doesnt have any tails on the letters, making it easier to read on screens. Sans-serif fonts are great for blocks or paragraphs of text big or small. Some examples of a sans-serif font are Lato and Raleway. Serif and Decorative fonts are great to use for headings, sub-headings, and titles. Some examples of a serif font are Times and Sacramento. Some examples of a decorative font are Lobster and Impact.
  • How does one appropriately title their graph?
This might be more of a Dr. Watkins question. Take a look at the data you have and what you're trying to prove with it. I think that will help start the conversation on titling graphs.
  • How do I split/make more panels on Piktochart?
To make more panels on Piktochart, go to the left side of your canvas and locate the small side bar. Click the "+" button and a new panel will appear below. It will be the same size as the previous one.
  • How do I change the background of my Infographic on Piktochart?
Select "Background" from the left side tool bar (the square symbol). From there you can drag and drop a pre-made background or type in a HEX color code.
  • Can I use an image for a chart?
You can use icons with svg capability to customize any charts. As for actual images (.png or.jpeg files), you can not use it for creating charts.
